F.P. Journe, was founded in 1999 by none other than François-Paul Journe. Known for its artisanal approach to watchmaking, this Swiss manufacturer creates timepieces entirely by hand. Their dedication to craftsmanship is evident by the number of watches they release per year: less than 1,000. Some of its most popular models; The F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain (which they released at launch in 1999), the Chronomètre à Résonance, and the Chronomètre Bleu are now some of the most coveted watches in the world.

The FP Journe Chronometre Bleu was introduced in November of 2009. It is the first FP Journe watch to feature a case made of tantalum, a rare, hard and dark grey metal with blue overtones. This case (39mm) houses the hand-wound caliber 1304 CS movement, which can be seen through the transparent case back. The blue hue is accentuated by the Chrome Blue dial.

Journe designed the Chronomètre Optimum in 2001, but it wasn't until 2012 that it was introduced as part of the offerings from the brand. Combining dead beat seconds, a constant force remontoire, and other distinctly "Journe" features used across his other models, the watch is a technical achievement with the singular goal of increased timekeeping precision. 

This example is part of the Black Label collection, making it all the more special. Available only from F.P. Journe boutiques, Black Label models have a unique black dial that make them easily recognizable and highly rare. With a total production of around 900 watches per year, the Black Label models are a very small subset of total Journe production.

Count on F.P. Journe to make a quartz movement undeniably cool. Termed an "electromechanical" movement by the brand, the Élégante contains a mechanical motion detector. This is what's visible on the dial at 4 o'clock. When the Élégante remains motionless for 35 minutes, it goes into a standby mode where the mechanical parts of the watch, such as the hands, stop. 

However, a microprocessor within the movement continues to keep time and as soon as motion is detected again, the hands move back to the correct time. This preserves energy and puts a specifically "Journe" experience on what could otherwise be a standard quartz watch.

The tonneau case shape, use of titanium or titalyt for the material, and rubber strap make this an incredibly easy watch to wear and also incredibly difficult to find.
