The Rolex Explorer benefited from experience gained in the Himalayas, acquiring its clearly distinctive hour and minute hands, and its landmark, highly legible, black dial with luminescent indices and large Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. It is designed for optimal legibility even in the dark – a crucial feature for explorers. It stood at the base for all Oyster Professional models that followed. This reference is distinguished by its 39 mm case, 3mm larger compared to earlier models.

This variation was introduced in 2016 with the main difference being the luminous markers at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. This designates this dial as a Mark 2.

Released alongside the reference 124270, Rolex surprised the world with the introduction of the reference 124273. Executed in two-tone "Rolesor" for the first time in the model's history, this latest iteration of the iconic sports watch reshaped conceptions of what an Explorer could look like, while maintaining the integral DNA of the storied sports watch. While perhaps controversial, tasteful applications of 18k yellow gold on the timepiece's dial, hands, bezel, crown, and Oyster bracelet's center links naturally afford an extra touch of luxury and sophistication.
 
Like the more traditional stainless steel variant, the reference 124273 measures 36 mm in diameter, and features the model name printed on the dial's upper half, just as Rolex had done on the earliest of Explorer references. Also powered by the watchmaker's updated caliber 3230 movement, this release is representative of both a significant mechanical and aesthetic departure for the storied adventure timepiece.

Of interest to the astute collector is the Mark 1 dial variation. When introduced, the 3, 6, and 9 hour markers on this model were non-luminous. In 2016, Rolex introduced the Mark 2 dial that has luminous markers at these hours and a slightly longer handset.

The Rolex Explorer 114270 was introduced in 2001 as the successor to the 14270. It is powered by caliber 3130 and features a bracelet with solid end links.

To the immense delight of devoted purists and understated watch enthusiasts alike, 2021 marked a triumphant return to form for the Rolex Explorer. Following eleven years of its production in an oversized, 39 mm case, the go-anywhere-do-anything Rolex had finally returned to its original 36 mm profile. Departing from its original dimensions, this reference introduced 19 mm lugs and bracelet endlinks, as opposed to those measuring 20 mm featured on the model in all of its past iterations. While seemingly a trivial change, this downsize afforded the Explorer a more tapered profile on the wrist, while improving overall comfort and wearability. 

Committed to continually powering their timepieces with movements produced using the most advanced of components, Rolex also replaced the Explorer’s caliber 3132 movement with the notably upgraded caliber 3230. Boasting the brand’s patented Chronergy escapement and a blue Parachrom hairspring, the reference 124270 exists as the most efficient Explorer to date, with an increased power reserve of 70 hours.
